At Alberta Psychology Group, we understand that seeking therapy can raise many questions, especially if it’s your first time. Below, we’ve provided answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about therapy and our services. If you have additional questions or need more information, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help!
What is therapy and how can it help me?
Therapy is a safe, confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with a trained professional. It offers the opportunity to gain insight, work through challenges, develop coping strategies, and create meaningful changes in your life. Therapy can help with various concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, self-esteem, and more.
What types of therapy do you offer?
At Alberta Psychology Group, we offer a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, tailored to meet your unique needs. Some of the therapies we offer include:
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps you identify and challenge negative thought patterns and replace them with healthier ways of thinking.
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Focuses on improving emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills.
-
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): A relationship-focused therapy designed to help couples strengthen their emotional connection.
-
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): A trauma-focused therapy that helps individuals process distressing memories and reduce the impact of trauma.
-
Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Helps cultivate present-moment awareness and emotional regulation.
-
Trauma-Informed Therapy: Focuses on understanding and addressing the impact of trauma in a safe, empathetic way.
We also offer online therapy for those who prefer remote sessions.
How do I know which therapist is right for me?
We understand that every individual has unique needs, so we strive to match you with the therapist who best aligns with your goals, preferences, and challenges. You can choose a therapist based on their specialties or areas of expertise. If you’re unsure, our intake team is happy to help guide you to the right fit.
What can I expect in my first therapy session?
In your first therapy session, your therapist will start by getting to know you, your history, and the issues you’re hoping to work through. You’ll have the opportunity to share your concerns, and your therapist will ask questions to understand your goals for therapy. Together, you’ll create a plan for how to approach your sessions moving forward. It’s a collaborative process, and we aim to create a safe, supportive environment where you feel comfortable.
How long do therapy sessions last?
Typically, therapy sessions last 50 to 60 minutes, though this can vary depending on the type of therapy and individual needs. Some clients prefer longer sessions, which can be arranged upon request.
How often do I need to come to therapy?
The frequency of therapy sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. For many clients, weekly or bi-weekly sessions are helpful, especially at the beginning of therapy. As you progress, you may meet less frequently. Your therapist will work with you to determine the best schedule.
What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
We understand that life can get busy. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we ask that you give us at least 24 hours’ notice. This allows us to offer your appointment time to someone else. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice may incur a cancellation fee.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes, we offer online therapy for clients who prefer remote sessions or who cannot attend in person. Online therapy offers the same level of care and confidentiality as in-person therapy. It’s a convenient option that allows you to access support from the comfort of your own home.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, your therapy sessions are completely confidential. We take your privacy very seriously. We follow all ethical and legal guidelines to ensure that your information remains private, except in certain situations (e.g., risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by law). You’ll be informed of any exceptions to confidentiality at the beginning of your therapy.
How long will I need therapy?
The duration of therapy varies depending on your needs, goals, and the issues you’re working through. Some people benefit from a few sessions, while others may continue therapy for several months or longer. Your therapist will work with you to establish a plan for treatment and will reassess your progress regularly.
How much do therapy sessions cost?
Our rates are consistent with the recommended fees suggested by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. Please visit our Fees and Insurance page for more detailed information on pricing and insurance coverage options. If you have any questions, our team is happy to provide more information.
Can I use my insurance to pay for therapy?
Yes, our therapists are usually covered by insurance. However, we recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm the details of your plan. We also offer receipts for insurance claims. If you’re unsure about coverage, we can help you navigate the process.
What if I’m not sure therapy is right for me?
It’s completely normal to feel uncertain about therapy, especially if it’s your first time. If you’re unsure, we encourage you to reach out to us for a consultation or to ask any questions you may have. Therapy can be a powerful tool for growth and healing, but it’s important that you feel comfortable and confident in the process. We’re here to help guide you.
